Modular Level Design
Q: Why is the player there?
A: You have mysteriously woken up in a strange castle where architecture and item placement just feels off, almost as if your still dreaming.
Q: What is the player's goal?
A: As you roam the halls of the castle, you soon realize there is something much more sinister going on here than just a simple dream. You just have to find a way to escape before it's too late for you.
Q: Where is the start and the end of the level?
A: You start in the dungeon, then climb some stairs before falling into a pit. Then you must then find your way through the labyrinth, somewhere within the exit lies.
Q: What obstacles will the player have to overcome?
A: Using the unique item placement in each dead end, you can map out where you've already been. However, the limited light can make it harder for you to find your way through the maze.
Other info: I started with the intro part with the dungeon, stairs, and pit. Then I mapped out the labyrinth in Microsoft Paint. Most of the maze stayed the same between the concept art and the final game, but some halls and rooms were changes to make it both easier to develop and harder to navigate. Finally, I added some details, like the celling fixtures to act as light sources, and the unique décor of each dead end.
